Returning to College? Ease the transition

ACCC_AZWhen adults need to re-tool for a new career, community colleges are the ultimate resource. To make the most of a return to the classroom, try these tips:

Don’t worry about your age. Many students will be “nontraditional” students (over the age of 25) and most are juggling jobs, families and other responsibilities, just like you. In fact, the average Atlantic Cape student is 25 years old, and in fall 2014, nearly one-third of all students were age 25 or older.

Have letters of recommendation from employers and copies of licenses and certifications earned available if you are pursuing a Prior Learning Assessment. “Be prepared to provide as much information to Admissions as you can on your work experience and any training you received in the workforce,” says Barbara Clark, Admissions Transcript Evaluator at Atlantic Cape. This step can help you receive credit for prior learning experiences and give you a head start on earning your degree.

Make a beeline to the counseling office. Advisors can help chart your academic and financial course of action. They can walk you through the process of registering for classes, financial aid, online options, parking and more.
Assess your skills. Do you need tutoring, a refresher on computer skills, or developmental courses? Atlantic Cape has all of these services available for you.

Study the demands of the local economy
, and how to maximize the earning potential of what you’re good at. But as important as your marketability is, you should pursue what you love. Interest in a job is as important as your ability to do it.

Consider your time management. Schedule classes online or around your busy lifestyle. Instead of going home right after class, stop by the college library to study or complete an assignment, recommends Jean McAlister, Associate Dean of Continuing Education Operations at Atlantic Cape.

Get wired. Many professors enhance the classroom experience using tools such as Blackboard and other online resources. If you don’t have access to email and the Internet at home, you can use computer labs at any campus, McAlister suggests.

Identify your support system. Surround yourself with people who believe in you and your goals.

Get involved! Atlantic Cape has more than 20 clubs where you can forge bonds with other students with the same interests and gain practical experience, from the Paralegal Studies Club to the Atlantic Cape Choir to the Rewrites Literary Magazine.
